Established in 1945 and officially registered as a business in 1946, L. Wilson and Co was founded by Les Wilson and started as a small manufacturing business that turned out swivels on the kitchen table.
Les saw a need for quality rod building components and, being a fitter and turner by trade, began production of ferrules, screw winch fittings and guides for Butterworth rods. During this period of the 1950s and 1960s, L. Wilson and Co was the largest manufacturer of rod components in Australia.
Throughout the ensuing years, Wilson’s product lines grew and the business moved from the family home to Manilla St (1972) and then onto the current premises in Tingalpa in 1992. Les is officially retired from the business, but his favourite hobby is still Wilson Fishing and he makes sure he drops in every week to check out how current Director and son Graeme is guiding the ship.
In more modern times, L. Wilson and Co has forged long term partnerships with major brands such as Mustad Hooks, Sure Catch, Zerek Innovations, Mason Wires and ATC. All of these product lines are still available through L. Wilson and Co with constant development, modification and research a hallmark of the Wilson story these days.
While Graeme Wilson is the Director, it’s Kord Luckus who is leading the development of products these days. Kord is General Manager and as much a part of this family business as anyone. Kord’s story is classic L. Wilson and Co, starting as a rod binder in the rod factory over 25 years ago, learning all about the company and the trade, and bringing a wealth of practical fishing and business acumen to Wilson Fishing. Some of the latest developments in lures have been through Kord’s influence, highlighted by the Zerek Flat Shad, Zerek Fish Trap and Tango Shad.
Moreover, Wilson Fishing has always been about family and long term staff. Currently there are five members of the family working in various parts of the organisation and more than five more long term, 10-year-plus staff members. It says a lot about the company that those who start working at Wilsons, stay working at Wilsons and the cumulative fishing industry experience in the company is almost incalculable.
It’s been a hectic 70 years in a volatile trade and L. Wilson and Co is looking forward to the next 70 years. With the development of world class rods in the Venom and Live Fibre ranges, growing links with Mustad Hooks and the release of Australian-designed lures from Zerek Innovations, it really looks as though the company is moving forward every year.
Add to this a commitment to excellence in customer service and it looks like the name Wilson Fishing will be with us for another 70 years.
